Monster Among the Roses, is a modern day fairy tale re-telling of Beauty and The Beast, and who doesn't love fairy tales? I hardly turn down a good fairy tale.
First, let me tell you about this cover. I wasn't 100% sure about this cover because it wasn't as "gotta read this now" as some of her others and the only thing I saw related was the rose.... But now I've read the book... and the cover makes sense! And IT. IS. PERFECT! It actually maybe one of my favorites, especially in relation to the story. You have to read the story to love the title as much as I do! :)
Now, onto the story! Ahh, what can I say about this story? It was heartbreaking and beautiful and then more heartbreaking and more beautiful. It was everything you want in a story. Things weren't perfect and you knew that from the start and I think that is what was so alluring about the whole story. You knew something bad had to have happened, but what? And why? The story had questions of all kinds popping through my head, along with wonderings and thoughts of what could happen or what I wanted to happen.
Let's be real, our favorite stories are the ones we get lost in and our imagination just runs wild with all of the possibilities and outcomes. We know what we want, but then there's a twist and we try to figure out how to get it. That is what makes us fall in love with a story, because we put ourselves in the story. We feel it to our bones; the heartbreak, the joy, the sadness, the love, the eternal happiness.
I truly loved this story because I felt so much during it all. A simple, modern day retelling of a classic fairy tale, but to me it was so much more. I hope Kage continues to bring us these beautiful retellings because they will always be bumped up on my reading list.
